Today treating patients with overlapping cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic (CKM) syndrome is top of mind. While our therapeutic toolkit has expanded, the real and perceived risks of hyperkalemia frequently act as barriers to prescribing foundational Goal-Directed Medication Therapies (GDMT).
This module addresses the shifting landscape of cardiovascular risk factors-specifically the rising epidemics of obesity, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and type 2 diabetes-and explores how an interdisciplinary approach can manage serum potassium levels without sacrificing life-saving, disease-modifying therapies.
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:

Broadly define Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) syndrome and identify the key opportunities to optimize goal-directed medication therapy (GDMT).

Describe epidemiology of hyperkalemia among people with CKM and highlight the frequency of GDMT dose reduction and discontinuation that impacts clinical outcomes and mortality.

Identify non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic approaches to manage hyperkalemia and review data regarding proactive serum potassium management and continuation of GDMTs.

Integrate patient risk factors, access and therapeutic goals in case-based examples that optimize GDMT in conjunction with effective serum potassium management strategies
